Peter grew up in Wisconsin as the youngest son of a pastor and worked on an exotic animal farm. At 16 he traveled to India and lived in Madhavapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, a predominantly BC (backward caste) village. He attended University of Minnesota before transferring to to City College of New York, where he received a double BA in Asian Studies and Philosophy. He also joined the music industry as a songwriter, producing the folk-review, “The Sugar Mountain Showcase” and the music & film festival, “Festival of the Hunt” in the East Village, Brooklyn.
In 2015, after recording an album, “Peter Arvo and the Hunt”, Peter went on a 7-month motorcycle music tour across North and Central America, sponsored by Royal Enfield. He then moved to Woodstock and managed Dreamland Recording Studios with Jerry Marotta.
In 2020, he earned a JD from Albany Law School, receiving the CLEA Externship Award for his work with the Office of Tibet (the Office of the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan Government-in-Exile). His thesis was a constitutional comparison between the Tibetan diaspora and the Kingdom of Bhutan. After law school Peter practiced restorative mediation and coaching, incorporating stoic and mindfulness techniques that have helped him minimize his OCD.
In 2022, Peter completed a postgraduate fellowship with the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives, in Dharamshala, India. His research focused on the democratization curriculum of the Tibetan diaspora and an analysis of the relationship between Buddhist values and practices, and democracy. A research documentary produced by Peter and Moonpeak Films is set to be released in March, 2024 and his article “A new curriculum” is set to be published in Tibet Journal in June, 2024.
Currently, Peter is pursuing a Master’s at the University of Oxford, in Tibetan and Himalayan Studies and works as a supervising attorney with the Office of Tibet. He lives with his partner, filmmaker and National Geographic Explorer, Munmun Dhalaria, between the UK and India.
